The popular Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit is coming to Charlotte. From June 18th to September 12th, 2021, the digital art experience will take place in Camp North End’s historic Ford Building. It’s being presented by Blumenthal Performing Arts.
This is the closest it’s coming to the Triangle, for now, so if you’re tempted to make a road trip, here are some things to know.
What is the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit?
Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit is a multi-media exhibit by Lighthouse Immersive. It includes 500,000 cubic feet of projections animating Vincent van Gogh’s work.
The moving images, which will highlight brushstrokes, detail and color, will be enhanced by the soundtrack by Luca Longobardi, who pioneered immersive digital art experiences in France.
Many people who have seen this exhibit say it’s like being inside one of Van Gogh’s paintings.
The installation includes the Mangeurs de pommes de terre (The Potato Eaters, 1885), the Nuit étoilée (Starry Night, 1889), Les Tournesols (Sunflowers, 1888), and La Chambre à coucher (The Bedroom, 1889), and much more.
The show was seen by over 2 million visitors in Paris, and had a sold-out run in Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Camp North End
One of the aspects of Immersive Van Gogh that has Charlotte residents intrigued is the setting. Camp North End is the most exciting 75 acres in Charlotte. It has a storied past. Ford Motor Company manufactured Model T and Model A cars here. During World War II the U.S. Army used it as a quartermaster depot. During the Cold War, the Nike Hercules Missile was manufactured here.
In 2016, development started on Camp North End with the goal of preserving its history and its industrial vibe, but turning it into a creative and commercial hub. Camp North End is the largest adaptive re-use project ever in Charlotte.
It’s wildly successful. Today it’s home to live music, the Goodyear Arts artist collective, festivals and more. It features more than a dozen places to eat, ranging from Latin street food to Leah & Louise, the “Modern Juke Joint” that sprung up during the pandemic, only to be named by Esquire Magazine as the #2 restaurant for 2020.
Camp North End is filled with art. Over on Charlotte on the Cheap, we’ve put together a self-guided walking tour of Camp North End’s art.
Camp North End is just 6 miles from the center of Charlotte, and is also just 1.3 miles from AvidXchange Music Factory, home to several music venues, including the Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheatre.
Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit will be inside the massive Ford Building.
Haven’t I heard of this before?
Van Gogh’s work seems to be well suited for an immersive multimedia experience. There are actually at least four other touring immersive Van Gogh experiences, including:
- Imagine Van Gogh: The Immersive Exhibition
- Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience
- Beyond Van Gogh: An Immersive Experience
- Van Gogh Alive
Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit was featured in the Netflix series, “Emily in Paris.”
