Make Father’s Day 2020 special in the Triangle with these ideas of how to spend the weekend. When deals or freebies for Dad are announced we’ll let you know that too!
As Dad always says, “We’re not made of money.” Also, “Close the door, we don’t own the electric company.” And “If your friends jumped off the bridge would you do it too?”
Check out some of these events and deals and start planning for a special Father’s Day on the cheap. Father’s Day is Sunday, June 21st, 2020. Some of these events take place on other days on Father’s Day Weekend and some of the activities are always available.
Make sure to follow the links for important details. This list will be updated as more Father’s Day deals and events are announced.
If you know a dad who’s missing baseball, treat him to a cookout with some favorites from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Baseball @ Home gives you three choices for a cookout that serves 15-30 people, with Bright Leaf Hot Dogs, hamburgers, and Chandler’s Pork BBQ, as well as extras like corn dogs, Cracker Jacks, sunflower seeds and more. Supplies are limited and you need to order in advance and pick up your package Thursday or Friday.
Get a Free Burrito
Dads get a free burrito at Tijuana Flats on Father’s Day. No purchase necessary. Details here.
Through Sunday, June 21st, buy a dozen cookies at Insomnia Cookies and get a dozen free. No promo code needed. Or use the promo code DADJOKES to get 20% off a cookie cake. Local pickup and delivery only.
Go to a Drive-in Movie
Drive-in movies are more popular than ever, since so much of our entertainment has been paused. There are at least two places to watch movies under the stars that we know about that are within a reasonable drive from the Triangle. Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre in Henderson is about 40 miles from Raleigh and Durham, and less from Wake Forest. It shows movies 7 nights a week in the summer. And Hubb’s Farm in Clinton, about 75 miles south of Raleigh, and convenient to readers in the south part of Wake County, is showing movies on Saturday nights for now. In both case, you might want to get tickets in advance in case they sell out.
Hit the Trails
Go on a hike! We have put together a photo guide to hiking eight North Carolina State Parks. We strongly advise that if you are going on the weekend that you get a very early start, because parks have been closing their gates when they meet capacity, and in some cases, that hasn’t taken long.
Juneteenth is the celebration of the emancipation of African-American people from American slavery. Celebrate this weekend with a car parade, a market, farm tours and more.
Celebrate Summer Solstice with Stonehenge
Father’s Day coincides with Solstice this year! Traditionally, crowds gather at Stonehenge to watch the sun rise behind the Heel Stone, but since Stonehenge can’t accommodate crowds this year, for the first time ever, they will be live streaming Summer Solstice from Stonehenge. North Carolina time: Watch sunset on Saturday, June 20th, at 4:26 p.m., and watch sunrise on Saturday, June 21st, at 11:52 p.m. If those times are convenient for you, they’ll have the videos for to watch later.
Bird Watch from Home
Right now, Wild Birds Unlimited has a promo code, DAD, that will get you 25% off one item, so this is a great time to help set up a backyard environment to attract birds! You can order online for pickup or delivery. There are Wild Birds Unlimited locations in Wake Forest and Chapel Hill. Valid through June 21st.
