Emancipation Day, a long-standing North Carolina Tradition, is a commemoration of the Emancipation Proclamation. Traditionally this was celebrated on January 1st, and included a parade and program, followed by singing, poetry reading, and speeches by both black and white leaders.
The City of Raleigh and Pope House Museum is traveling back in time and holding an Emancipation Day celebration on Saturday, January 7th, 2023, from 1 to 3 p.m. It will take place at City of Raleigh Museum, 220 Fayetteville Street, Raleigh, and is free to everyone.
The event will include historic speeches from 1870-1900, period music, and more.
Also, there will be an Emancipation Day Trolley Tour the same day, leaving Pope House Museum at 10 a.m. Learn more about the Emancipation Day Trolley Tour.
