The Krispy Kreme Challenge was started by NC State students with a passion for running and for doughnuts. The race puts your stomach, not just your legs, to the test. As they say, it is a “unique challenge of both athletic and gastrointestinal skill.”
The Krispy Kreme Challenge requires participants to run 2.5 miles, starting at the Memorial Belltower on the NC State campus, at 2011 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, to the Krispy Kreme at the intersection of Peace and Person Streets.
They must eat a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts at the Krispy Kreme and then somehow run back to the Memorial Belltower.
Participants must complete the race in under an hour to be eligible for winning, although there’s a “casual” category that doesn’t restrict the time to an hour and doesn’t require you to eat twelve doughnuts. (Read on.)
The Krispy Kreme Challenge by the numbers:
- 2400 calories
- 12 doughnuts
- 5 miles
- 1 hour
The Krispy Kreme Challenge doesn’t fall into the “cheap” category that we generally cover on Triangle on the Cheap. It’s $45 to register. However, it all benefits the UNC Children’s Hospital. And there are doughnuts involved.
Also, it’s free to watch the race. (Maybe you’d like to donate to the cause, though?)
This is the 16th year for the Krispy Kreme Challenge, and it’s still run by NC State students, and it still benefits UNC Children’s Hospital. In 2019, it raised $190,000 for the hospital, bringing the total to more than $1.6 million since the Krispy Kreme Challenge started.
It takes place on Saturday, February 1st, 2020. The race starts at 8 a.m. Race bibs can be picked up by the Memorial Belltower from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. that morning. Registration will still be open on race day.
There are three categories you can register in, but they all cost $45:
- The Challenger. Only Challengers are eligible for winning. They must consume all twelve doughnuts and complete the race in under an hour.
- Casual. No rush. And you don’t need to eat all twelve doughnuts. You can also bring the box of doughnuts with you as you run back to the Belltower to enjoy later.
- No Doughnut. You want to run the race but not eat any doughnuts.
