Welcome Tattoo, 316 West Geer Street, Durham, North Carolina, is hosting Before the Boom: How the 60s and 70s Rewired the Future of Tattooing on Sunday, August 31, 2025, 5 to 9 p.m.
Doors open at 5 p.m. Browse a Pop-Up Shop by The BookMistress, a curated selection of rare tattoo books, vintage prints, and memorabilia from The BookMistress pop-up shop.
Then at 7 p.m., the presentation begins.
Tickets are $15, with proceeds going to Freedom German Shepherd Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to saving and rehoming German Shepherds in North Carolina.
This event is an in-depth look at the decades that transformed modern tattoo culture.
Tattoo historian C.W. Eldridge (Tattoo Archive, North Carolina) will lead this compelling presentation on the pivotal years that shifted tattooing from a backroom trade to a global phenomenon.
This isn’t your average flash-sheet retrospective — Eldridge will explore the sweeping changes that redefine tattooing during the cultural upheaval of the 60s and 70s.
Attendees can expect answers to questions like:
- What happened to the sponge & bucket shops?
- When were tattoo conventions born?
- Where did this new generation of tattooists come from?
From outlaw artists to art school radicals, this talk traces the historical thread that connects them all.
