Neighborhoods Hike with John Schelp
Sunday, October 27, 2024
10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Across from White Star Laundromat
904 9th Street, Durham, NC
Free (no sign-up required)
Why did the creek run blue on Monday and red on Tuesday? Who wrote the song, “Tobacco Road” and was born behind Monuts? Where did Madonna take early dance lessons? What’s buried under Duke Hospital? Where does “Bull Durham” tobacco come from? Who lived on the hilltops and who lived in the creek bottoms? Where were Durham’s three municipal incinerators located? Where’s the largest job center in Durham (it’s not Duke)? Where was Kevin Costner spotted in his boxer shorts?
Come along and find out. Sunday, Oct 27 at 10AM. The two-hour walking tour starts at Ninth & Green, across from White Star.
Local street historian John Schelp will join us as we walk through Old West, Watts-Hillandale and Walltown. Co-hosted by the Museum of Durham History, Preservation Durham and the Sierra Club. No dogs please (over 200 hikers last time). Parking on nearby streets.
