This lantern parade is one of three community lantern parade that in the Triangle this winter. The longstanding Solstice Lantern Walk took place in Hillsborough on the evening of Solstice, December 21st, 2021, and a new event, the Winter Solstice Lantern Walk at the N.C. Museum of Art, took place on December 18th.
All of these walks are participatory events. Members of the community walk together, carrying homemade lanterns, to mark the longest night of the year. The lanterns are lit with LED or string lights (not flames) and are generally white.
