On Saturday, September 10th, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, September 11th, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the North Carolina State Capitol historic site, at 1 East Edenton Street, Raleigh, will host a weekend of living history with the Hannibal Guards, a Black military living history group.
The Guards will portray Capt. George Willis’ Company H, 1st NC State Troops, who were stationed in Raleigh in 1870.
Costumed interpreters will demonstrate drills and guard posts, as well as host activity stations that highlight voting, the Kirk-Holden War, and the role of the Freedman’s Bureau during this period. Visitors will experience an immersive setting to set the stage for conversations about North Carolina during the Reconstruction period following the Civil War.
This event is free and there are no reservations or tickets necessary. The public is invited to visit the Capitol and interact with the living history interpreters. The Capitol will be open for self-guided tours during both days of the event.
The Hannibal Guards are dedicated to telling the story of the United States Colored Troops (1862-1866) as correctly as possible, through the art of historical interpretation.
Members of the Hannibal Guards are based along the Eastern seaboard and the Midwest, ranging from Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., North Carolina, New York, Illinois, and Missouri. The Guards regularly participate in events with county parks, the National Park Service, and local historic sites along the east coast.
