This year marks the 20th anniversary of the devastating terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001.
As we approach the anniversary of 9/11, which is sometimes known as Patriot Day, we are putting together a list of ways to commemorate that date in the Triangle. There will be several ceremonies.
In addition, September 11th is also designated as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, and we will include opportunities to participate in service projects as we learn about them.
Art of Remembrance — 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at NC State
The Crafts Center and Arts NC State are presenting Art of Remembrance — A Memorial Ceremony Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.
It will take place on Saturday, September 11th, 2021, at 7 p.m., at Stewart Theatre, 2610 Cates Avenue, Raleigh, on the NC State campus. The event will feature music, dance, poetry, and color guard and bagpipes. This is a free event, but you do have to register on Eventbrite. The event will also be livestreamed.
Duke University Chapel
Grant Us Peace: Music and Readings Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of 9/11. Duke Chapel musicians and the Ciompi Quartet will perform compositions with themes of remembrance, peace, and reconciliation by composers such as Joan Tower, Felix Mendelssohn, Shireen Abu-Khader, Ned Rorem, Ola Gjeilo, and George Walker. The musical performances are interwoven with poetic commentary. This event takes place at Duke University Chapel, 401 Chapel Drive, Durham, on September 11th, 2021, at 7:30 p.m. It’s free to attend. It will also be livestreamed.
Cary’s 9/11 Day of Service
Volunteer groups will be planting vegetable gardens at Cary’s Fire Stations 6 and 8. There’s a 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. shift. Learn more and register here.
9/11 Ceremony at Fire Station 1 in Holly Springs
The public is invited to attend this annual ceremony hosted by Holly Springs Fire Department to remember the lives lost because of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The gathering is at the fire station’s 9/11 memorial, which includes a piece of steel from the North Tower of the World Trade Center. September 11th, 2021, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Fire Station 1, 700 Flint Point Lane, Holly Springs.
9/11 Day of Remembrance Service in Fuquay-Varina
The Town of Fuquay-Varina is holding a remembrance service on September 11th, 2021, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., at Fuquay-Varina Arts Center, 123 E. Vance Street, Fuquay-Varina. Guest speaker will be Fuquay-Varina resident and retired combat veteran David Tupper.
Activate Good September Month of Service
Activate Good has listed many service opportunities on September 11th and throughout the month. Check them all out here. Some require registration (and some are already full.)
PeakFest, a festival in Downtown Apex, will start the day with a Patriot Day Ceremony, hosted by the Apex American Legion Post 124. There will be a flag raising at 8:15 a.m., and then a service memorial at 8:30 p.m., at the corner of Saunders Street and N. Salem Street.
MG’s Vision & Lights on Holt Road
MG’s Vision & Lights on Holt Road, formerly known as Christmas Lights on Holt Road, and best known for a very popular and extensive Christmas lights display, is hosting a drive-through tribute on September 11th, 2021, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This event was announced on their Facebook page. 1012 Holt Road, Apex.
Ceremony at Crepe Myrtle Celebration
The 47th Annual Crepe Myrtle Celebration will feature a special ceremony to honor the 20th anniversary of 9/11 on September 11th, 2021, at 12 p.m. Angier Depot Square, 19 E. Depot Street, Angier.
Four Oaks Acorn Festival
The 32nd Annual Four Oaks Acorn Festival, which takes place on September 11th in Four Oaks (in Johnston County), will start the day with a 9/11 remembrance ceremony. The festival starts at 10 a.m.
