February 2nd, 2024, is Groundhog Day. All around the country, people are looking to groundhogs to predict the weather. If the groundhog doesn’t sees its shadow we’re in for six more weeks of winter. If it does, break out the flip flops.
The biggest Groundhog Day celebration in the Triangle used to be at North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, where for many years Sir Walter Wally has made his prediction.
Last year, Sir Walter Wally decided to retire from the weather forecasting business, so there is no longer a Groundhog Day Shadow Ceremony at the Museum.
North Carolina’s last remaining weather-predicting groundhog is Snerd, in Garner. White Deer Park is hosting a Groundhog Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on February 2nd, 2024, during which Snerd will make her prediction.
