Chatham Community Library, at 197 Highway 87 N, Pittsboro, presents a huge number of free events for the community, including film screenings, technology classes, story times for young children, book clubs, genealogy programs and more.

Black History Month Film Screening: February One: The Story of the Greensboro Four

Chatham Community Library kicks off its month long Black History Month celebration with a screening of the documentary, February One: The Story of the Greensboro Four (2003), beginning at 11:00 am in the Holmes Meeting Room. Based largely on first hand accounts and rare archival footage, February One documents one volatile winter in Greensboro that not only challenged public accommodation customs and laws in North Carolina, but served as a blueprint for the wave of non-violent civil rights protests that swept across the South and the nation throughout the 1960s.

Come learn about the diverse, fascinating world of raptors – birds that hunt for their food. The conservation organization Raptor Insights will bring and introduce up to 8 different types of hawks, falcons and owls. Learn about each species’ life history, identification, and factors affecting their population.
This one hour presentation is most appropriate for children from third grade and above, and for anyone interested in birds of prey.

Black History Month Speaker Series: Black Chatham: Its People and Institutions

In observance of Black History Month Chatham Community Library will host “Black Chatham: Its People and Institutions”, presented by Dr. Charles Johnson, Associate Professor and Director of Public History at North Carolina Central University. The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Holmes Meeting Room.
Film Screening: Iron Jawed Angels

The Chatham Community Library and the League of Women Voters in Chatham County will co-sponsor the showing of the Golden Globe award-winning HBO film Iron Jawed Angels (2004), beginning at 3:00 pm in the Holmes Meeting Room. The League of Women Voters is celebrating its 100th anniversary and the local chapter of the League invites the public to join in seeing the film, with Angelica Huston starring as the League founder Carrie Chapman Catt.
A celebration for all that women have achieved will conclude with a birthday cake in honor of the League of Women Voters 100th anniversary!
Black History Month Speaker Series: Enslaved Runaways in North Carolina: 1775-1840

In observance of Black History Month Chatham Community Library will host “Enslaved Runaways in North Carolina: 1775-1840”, presented by Dr. Freddie Parker, Professor Emeritus and former chair of North Carolina Central University’s History Department. The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Holmes Meeting Room. The program will include discussion on Maroon societies of the Great Dismal Swamp and other communities of former slaves.
Black History Month Fat Tuesday Celebration: Mardi Gras La Nouvelle Orleans

Black History Month Storytelling Event: North Carolina Association of Black Storytellers

The library’s Black History Month observance will culminate at 2:00 pm in the Holmes Meeting Room with the North Carolina Association of Black Storytellers (NCABS) as they weave their tales of history, mystery, tall tales, and family stories. An affiliate of the National Association of Black Storytellers, NCABS preserves, protects and passes on the historical truths, folklore, legends, myths and fables important to African American traditions.
Stories and STEAM: Celebrate Pi
