Wild Food Foragers is a group that searches out uncultivated foods growing around the Triangle. Its Facebook page is a good place to learn about upcoming outdoor excursions.
Programs throughout the year educate aspiring foragers on proper etiquette, practice and techniques. The cost to go on most forage sessions are $20 or more. However, we are sharing them here because there are always two FREE spots left open for anyone experiencing food insecurity for any reason. So, if that’s you, just message them on Facebook.

Free (but registration is required, and space is very limited.)
Walk along the river while working on how to identify different culinary fungi and discuss their nutritional values, while also discussing the barriers placed on African Americans when it comes to the foraging community.
Things you might find: Chicken of the Woods, Puff Balls, Cauliflower Mushroom, Chanterelle, Lobster Mushrooms, Meadow Mushrooms, Boletes, Indigo, Parasol, Peppery Milkcaps, Shaggy Manes, Honey.
5 out of 10 strength and endurance – approximately 4 1/2 mile walk on no or very few dedicated paths. Dress for weather and comfort. Bring tools for gathering fungi and water and bag lunch. Must wear BRIGHT ORANGE or REFLECTIVE clothing / hat. NO BATHROOM ON SITE ! Identification materials will be provided at the location. Last but not the least, follow the CDC guideline for Covid-19.
