Opening Celebration of Horace Kephart & The Great Smoky Mountains
March 28, 2025
5 to 7 p.m.
Free (RSVPs are encouraged, at the above link)
This exhibit is part of a series celebrating the rich cultural heritage and resiliency of Western North Carolina with exhibits organized by the Western Carolina University Mountain Heritage Center. This exhibit will be on view in the Wilson Gallery from March 25-June 24, 2025 during the museum’s regular visiting hours. The exhibit is free to visit.
In 1904, a 42-year-old librarian named Horace Kephart came to western North Carolina looking for a fresh start in the southern Appalachian wilderness. Over the next 27 years, his numerous articles and books captured a disappearing culture, provided practical advice for generations of outdoor enthusiasts, and spearheaded the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
During this event, staff and volunteers will be on hand to guide you through the exhibit. Brief remarks will be made at 6 PM. Refreshments will be served.
