If you’re up for a road trip to Charlotte, you’ll have the chance to learn about and honor one of the heroes on the Titanic who was from Roxboro, North Carolina, right outside the Triangle.
And if you live in Person County, NC, or you work for the USPS, you get a special discount the rest of the run of Titanic: The Exhibition in Charlotte. Read on for the details.
Often lost amid the tragedy of 1,500-plus people perishing in the 1912 sinking of RMS Titanic is the story of millions of pieces of mail that also went down with the ship.
Thanks to a collaboration with the Person County Museum of History in Roxboro, North Carolina, that story will soon be shared with guests at Titanic: The Exhibition in Charlotte.
The first part of Titanic’s name, ‘RMS,’ stood for ‘Royal Mail Ship.’ These ships were the only way to transport mail intercontinentally in that era.
Beginning Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, and continuing through the end of the exhibition on Monday, Sept. 7, a collection of materials on loan from the museum in Roxboro will highlight the heroics of North Carolina native Oscar Scott Woody. Woody was one of five postal clerks aboard RMS Titanic charged with shepherding 7 million pieces of mail from mainland Europe to the U.S.
To commemorate the launch of the gallery, Aug. 13 will be declared Oscar Scott Woody Day at the 25,000-square-foot exhibition. Carrie Currie, executive director of the Person County Museum of History, and Pam Wood, a relative of Woody and Roxboro resident, will both speak at the unveiling.
The gallery will include a framed letter, signed by then Governor Mike Easley, declaring Nov. 24, 2003, as Oscar Scott Woody Day in North Carolina. The post office in Roxboro made history in 2004 when it was designated the Oscar Scott Woody Post Office Building, making it the first post office in the nation named for a postal worker who died in the line of duty.
U.S. Postal Service employees can enter code USPS20 in the “voucher or gift card” field at check out, and Person County residents can enter code PERSON20 in that field. Both codes will provide 20% off tickets to Titanic: The Exhibition. U.S. Postal Service employees and Person County residents must present a valid ID upon entry. Buy tickets here.
