The Last Dance: A Photo Exhibition documents the final season of North Carolina Central University’s baseball team. This exhibition will be at Historic Durham Athletic Park, 500 W. Corporation Street, Durham, on May 28th, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This description of the exhibition is from the photographer:
Across the nation, HBCU baseball programs are on the chopping block (and there weren’t many to begin with in the first place). Out of the 299 NCAA Division 1 baseball teams, only 17 belong to historically black colleges and universities as of 2022.
Durham is no exception to this trend – on the same field that Crash Davis drove home runs in the 1988 movie classic Bull Durham, the Eagles of North Carolina Central University faced their final days last spring.
N.C. Central is the fifth American HBCU baseball team eliminated in the past four years.
Acclaimed photojournalist Al Drago (whose work is regularly published on and within The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, Rolling Stone, TIME, CNN, The New Yorker, The BBC, NBC Nightly News, and others) followed the Eagles through their end moments.
On Saturday, May 28th, the preserved photo history of this one HBCU team’s last dance – and what their legacy signifies for the future of Black baseball in America – will be on exhibit on the field where they play no more.
Come walk the bases, on the same field from Bull Durham fame, and view the photos up close and personal. No tickets required for entry – this event is free and open to the public.
Please note this event takes place on the baseball field itself. The DAP is ADA accessible.
