New York’s famous popular science lecture series, The Secret Science Club, is now in North Carolina.
The next event, Do Animals Lie?, will take place October 15, 2024, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., at Lapin Bleu, 106A N. Graham Street, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The speaker will be Duke University Professor of Biology & Neurobiology Steve Nowicki.
This is a free event and suitable for a general, science-friendly audience.
Biologist, neurobiologist and author Steve Nowicki takes us into the minds of animals via studies of evolution and neurobiology and answers an age old question – are animals sophisticated enough to actually deceive each other? And if so, why would they?
Humans lie all the time, but do animals deceive each other as well? This talk will begin to answer this question and describe a solution to the puzzle of some of the contradictions encountered. Dr. Nowicki’s research addresses the nuts-and-bolts of how animal communication works and the costs imposed by producing and receiving signals, drawing on research that spans cellular biochemistry, neural development, and anatomical constraints.
Before & After:
- Imbibe the tricky cocktail of the night, the Deceit-ini!
- Groove to the animalistic tunes
- Bring your questions for the Q&A with Dr. Nowicki
