XOXOK’s new album Jesus Piece is a concept album that follows Jenkins as he reckons with the toll of internalized racism and misogynoir in brilliant, sonorous color.
XOXOK emerged as a result of Keenan Jenkins making a hard pivot into music after completing a Ph.D. in psychology. In 2019, the Durham-based band released the dynamic, atmospheric Worthy (“A pristine EP…fully formed” – INDY Week), which deftly straddled the line between indie rock and soul. A collection of singles in released in 2020 showed the band leaning further into the latter genre, including “Right On” (“A gut punch of a protest song that sneaks up on you” – Chapelboro), and “I’ll Be Fine” (“Nimble, sweet, yet totally epic” – INDY Week).
In 2020 and 2021, Jenkins watched the protests across the country; picked up a James Baldwin book for the first time; and – yes, of course – went to therapy. All of these elements combined to create the fertile ground from which the songs on Jesus Piece emerged.
Tre. Charles is an Alternative/Indie Soul artist who dives into the depths of his soul and invites you into his world with an expressive blend of warm and soulful undertones, profound and powerful lyrics, and emotive crooning; all of which helps you navigate your way through the encompassing experience. His sound has drawn comparisons of modern talents like Sampha, Hozier, and James Blake but also glints of classic pioneers like Muddy Waters and Lauryn Hill. With hints of avant-garde R&B, modern indie flares, and ambient soul, Charles’ honest & thought provoking music has the ability to make every performance feel like a transformative experience.
