From October 1 through December 31, 2026, the Friends of Johnston County Parks will host the 2026 JoCo Fall Hiking Challenge, featuring nine hikes ranging from 0.6 to 4 miles.
Participants can hike as many trails as they like and submit each completed hike for a chance to win a prize. No registration is required. Submit your completed hike on this form.
The challenge kicks off Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Clemmons Educational State Forest, 2256 Old U.S. Hwy 70, Clayton, North Carolina.
A ranger will lead a hike along the Talking Tree Trail, followed by an update on local parks and trails. Visitors can also hike the nearby Talking Rocks Trail.
Hikes include:
- Cole Plantation Loop, Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site (1.5 miles)
- Buffalo Creek Greenway, Smithfield (2.94 miles)
- Sam’s Branch Greenway, Clayton (1.25 miles)
- Loop Trail, Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center (2 miles)
- Bootleggers Loop, Williamson Nature Preserve (1 mile)
- Flower Hill Trail, Flower Hill Nature Preserve (1 mile)
- Clayton Riverwalk on the Neuse, Clayton (4 miles)
- Talking Tree Trail, Clemmons Educational State Forest (0.6 miles)
- Talking Rocks Trail, Clemmons Educational State Forest (0.8 miles)
