Groundbreaking photographer Edward Burtynsky brings his most ambitious multimedia project to date to Duke and Durham. 40 years in the making, “In the Wake of Progress” combines the most powerful photographs and film footage of Burtynsky’s career, choreographed to a powerful award-winning original score composed by Phil Strong.
Mounted on three large-scale LED screens on Duke’s East Campus and visible from Main Street, this deeply moving and intentionally overwhelming 22-minute experience immerses audiences in the story of human industry’s impact on the Earth, urging us to rethink our legacy and seek a more sustainable future.
Aligning directly with Duke’s Climate Commitment and programmed as part of Duke’s Centennial Celebration, Duke Arts mounts this powerful work with an eye towards the next 100 years.
