North Carolina’s revolutionary past comes to life at Hillsborough’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of The Third Provincial Congress on Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., in historic downtown Hillsborough.
This free public event honors the pivotal 1775 gathering that helped shape the path to independence and is part of North Carolina’s America 250 commemorations.
The day-long event will transport visitors to the Colonial era with immersive living history experiences. Guests will encounter reenactors in full period attire portraying delegates and townsfolk—bringing to life the sights, sounds, and stories of 18th-century Hillsborough.
Watch as costumed interpreters recreate moments from the congress and offer insights into what it was like to live on the brink of revolution.
A highlight of the event will be a dramatization of the Third Provincial Congress, set against the backdrop of Hillsborough’s historic courthouse. This performance will showcase real debates and decisions made by early North Carolinians as they confronted questions of liberty, resistance, and self-governance.
Throughout the day, a Colonial market on the grounds of the historic courthouse will feature displays from civic groups and historic sites throughout North Carolina as well as craftspeople offering goods inspired by the 1700s.
From handmade goods and candles to children’s games, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. It’s the perfect place to pick up a keepsake or simply soak up the ambiance of Revolutionary-era life.
Special guest speakers and historians will host talks and Q&A sessions to discuss the significance of the congress and how it began transforming visions of freedom into reality. As an additional treat, the winners of the North Carolina Sons of the American Revolution high school oratory contest will deliver their speeches.
Whether you’re a history buff or a casual visitor, you’ll walk away with new knowledge and appreciation for the people and ideas that shaped our state.
All events and activities are free and open to the public. Ample signage and volunteers will help guide visitors between locations, and local restaurants and shops will be open to welcome attendees throughout the day.
