Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream is celebrating its 80th birthday in 2025.
The business was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1945, when Alice Handel started serving homemade ice cream from her husband’s gas station, using her own personal recipes and fruit from her backyard.
It’s grown to offer 140 rotating locations in over 150 locations in 15 states.

Handel’s is celebrating its 80th birthday with a special freebie for the folks who have been along for the whole ride. Anyone who is at least 80 years old gets a free small scoop of any flavor ice cream at participating locations on Sunday, July 20, 2025.
No purchase is required. No coupon needed. In-store only, while supplies last.
The date for the celebration is especially fitting because July 20, 2025, is National Ice Cream Day. Learn about more National Ice Cream Day deals and events in the Triangle.
