If you live in North Carolina, you may be able to use Direct File to file your taxes for free. In 2024, Direct File was launched as a pilot program by the IRS in 12 states. This year it has expanded to 13 more, including North Carolina.
You can use Direct File if you have a simple tax situation and you don’t exceed the income limits. Read on for information on eligibility, as well as other ways you might be able to file your taxes for free.
You can use Direct File on your computer, smartphone or tablet.
Direct File is available in English or Spanish, and uses prompts and checklists to help you file your federal taxes.
After completing your federal tax return, Direct File directs you to your state’s tax revenue site for state filing. In the case of a North Carolina resident, it will direct you to FileYourStateTaxes.org, North Carolina’s free filing tool.
