Crankies are illustrated scrolls encased in wooden boxes that act as “moving panoramas.” Though supposedly originating in as early as the 18th century, crankies continue to be fun and imaginative modes for sharing folklore, oral histories, and stories.
In this performance Asheville-based artist Jessica C. White provides a brief introduction to crankies, followed by a performance of her latest work accompanied by live music. White holds a BFA in sculpture from Eastern Carolina University, an MA and MFA in printmaking from the University of Iowa, and a graduate certificate in book arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book.
