Carolina Public Humanities is hosting two events that are part of the Being Human Festival. Being Human Festival is an international collection of community-focused events, organized and presented by local artists, scholars, and educators, highlight the incredible breadth of the humanities and demonstrate how they add depth and meaning to our lives, help us understand ourselves and one another, and provide context for the complex world around us.

Exploring Interconnectedness and Poetry

This program pairs a biologist and a poet in an interactive, wandering conversation that will explore new ways to encounter the natural world. What can we learn about birds by observing the caterpillars around us? How does “wildness” interact with man-made environments? We’ll explore these questions and more on a trek around Durham’s Beaver Marsh.
Participants are encouraged to bring a sense of curiosity… and comfortable walking shoes!

Landscape Histories in Rock, Plants, and Paint

This program pairs a biologist and an art historian in an interactive, wandering conversation that will explore new ways to encounter the natural world. How did ancient geological shifts influence the flora we see today? How have artists communicated the real discoveries and alluring fantasies of landscapes to viewers far away and through time? How have new technologies, shifting populations, and other changes effected the “wild spaces” of this area? We’ll explore these questions and more on a trek through the woods together.
