The City of Durham is hosting Welcoming Week 2023. The week is intended to bring neighbors of all backgrounds together to build strong connections.
Welcoming Week features several events from September 5 to 17, 2023. All of the events are free. Some require registration.

City-Wide Proclamation

At the City Council meeting on September 5th, Mayor Elaine O’Neil will declare Sep 8-17 “Welcoming Week” in Durham celebrating the contributions of immigrants and refugees in Durham and affirming the City’s commitment to inclusion. Residents who have been part of the City’s welcoming work will be recognized at a quilt created by immigrant women in Durham will hang in the lobby of City Hall throughout the week.
An Artistic Cultural Fair

Welcoming Week is dedicated to “bringing together neighbors of all backgrounds to build strong connections and affirm the importance of welcoming and inclusive places in achieving collective prosperity.” In honor, come on out for “An Artistic Cultural Fair” on Friday, September 8th! This is a family-inclusive program highlighting different cultures. There will be music, art groups, activities, community resources/organizations tabling, and food!

Hear the captivating narratives of four resilient immigrants and refugees as they recount their journeys to a new home. Discover the unique perspectives and stories of individuals who have overcome challenges, embraced opportunities, and contributed to the diverse tapestry of our community. The international soccer tournament is an event that brings together local teams with players from around the world to compete for an intramural-style championship.
