Wake Forest Dance Festival is a free, one-day, family-friendly event at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road, Wake Forest.
It takes place Saturday, October 5th, 2019, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The event will feature regional, national and international professional dancers, and emerging choreographers, along with local and regional advanced dance performers.
Performances during the festival include:
- Laura Halzack and Michael Trusnovec, alumni of the internationally acclaimed Paul Taylor Dance Company, will perform a duet from Roses, created in 1985 by one of the most celebrated choreographers of American Modern Dance, Paul Taylor.
- Grace Bergonzi and Kyle H. Martin will perform Ebb and Flow—a duet that calls to mind the rush and calm of the ocean tide created by Ailey II Artistic Director Troy Powell.
- Helen Simoneau Danse will perform an excerpt from DARLING, the newest work created by the acclaimed choreographer and founder of the company Helen Simoneau.
- African American Dance Ensemble will close the Festival Performance with a work choreographed by Ivy Burch performed to live African drumming.
The schedule for the day
Technical Rehearsal
9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The public is invited to observe the Technical Rehearsal, a practice run through of the Festival Performance to be presented on stage in the early evening. Following the rehearsal, join Wake Forest Dance Festival for a Q&A to gain a deeper understanding of the dance works.
Tour in Motion
1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
A Tour in Motion is a guided walking tour, beginning at the top of each hour, with 4 locations presenting short site specific dance works, showcasing various dance styles in intimate outdoor settings throughout Joyner Park. This immersive experience will showcase works by Lindsay Winthrop (NC), Rebecca McCormac (NY), Zoe Walders (NY), and Claire Fisher (OH).
Festival Performance
5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The culminating Festival Performance will feature extraordinary guest artists performing works by Paul Taylor (Paul Taylor Dance Company), Robert Weiss (Carolina Ballet), Helen Simoneau (Helen Simoneau Danse), along with students of University of North Carolina Greensboro and student performers of Svasti Dance (Greensboro, NC), Barriskill Dance Theater School (Durham, NC), and Wake Forest Academy of Fine Arts (Wake Forest, NC).

In addition, there will be a free screening of Paul Taylor: Dancemaker on Thursday, September 26th, 2019, at 6:30 p.m., at Sugar Magnolia Cafe, 219 S. White Street, Wake Forest.
The 2019 Wake Forest Dance Festival is honored to present a duet from Roses choreographed in 1985 by one of the most revered choreographers in dance history, Paul Taylor. The work will be performed by two esteemed dance artists and alumni of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Laura Halzack and Michael Trusnovec.
