The Chapel Hill – Carrboro NAACP is commemorating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Monday, January 20, 2025.
Please note that, due to the expected freezing temperatures, the MLK Day rally is moving indoors. This change was announced on Facebook.
The event will begin at a rally at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 106 N Roberson Street, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Following the rally, First Baptist Church will host a commemoration day service at 11 a.m. featuring keynote speaker Rev. Kendal McBroom, Director of Civil and Human Rights, General Board of Church & Society, United Methodist Church.
The event – whose theme this year is “Our Future, Our Fight” – is free and open to the public.
After you meet with your neighbors at Peace and Justice Plaza and begin the march, Chef Vimala Rajendran of Vimala’s CurryBlossom Cafe invites you to stop by for free hot cocoa and vegan chai (spiced black tea served with non-dairy milk). She will have a stand at the corner of Franklin and N. Roberson St. in front of Chapel Hill Tire. This will be her 15th year commemorating MLK Jr. by offering warm beverages at the NAACP march and rally.
She extends a warm welcome to marchers and worshippers to come to Vimala’s CurryBlossom Cafe after the commemoration service, where she will have a special soul food menu including black eyed peas and collards. You can find her restaurant in the old location of the Dairy Bar at 431 W. Franklin St. inside the courtyard with parking in the back (Accessed from S. Roberson St.)
The information about Vimala’s CurryBlossom Cafe was shared on Facebook by the Marion Cheek Jackson Center for Saving and Making History.
