Meredith College is hosting a FREE concert with New River Ensemble for kids and families. The concert takes place on Sunday, May 10, 2026, from 3 to 3:45 p.m., at Carswell Recital Hall, Wainwright Music Building, 3800 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, North Carolina.
The concert is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.
American Tales is a multimedia program that combines children’s books with live, original music and narration. New River Ensemble takes listeners on a journey through the adventures of John Henry, and the creation of the Erie Canal.
The program concludes with a jig movement from Trio in American Dance by NRE member Martha Hyde. Each Tale has an opportunity to participate, either with string instruments or singing.
If your child plays violin, viola or cello, bring it along!
John Henry
Explore the tale of American legend John Henry through a multi-media program of music, images and storytelling by NRE. This program combines Ezra Jack Keats’ (author of Snowy Day) book “John Henry: An American Legend” with original music by Brendan Cooney and narration by members of NRE. NRE then performs “Automation” an instrumental composition by Brendan Cooney based on the John Henry story.
Erie Canal
NRE takes listeners on a journey down the Erie Canal with traditional songs about the canal paired with a slideshow. The famous “Erie Canal” song gets a creative re-imagining in a clever arrangement by Martha Hyde.
