The Kraken, 2823 NC Highway 54 W, in Chapel Hill, is a roadhouse a few miles west of downtown Chapel Hill and Carrboro and a few miles east of Saxapahaw. It features a great front porch, free pool, and live music. They also show all the UNC basketball games.
There is typically no cover for the live bands, but donations, plus a portion of bar sales, pay the bands, so please donate. (And please tip the bartender.)

Shake Sugaree Americana Residency – Jonathan Byrd and guests
Jonathan Byrd is the charismatic minister and poet laureate of ceremonies for the great Wednesday night “Shake Sugaree” Americana Residency performances held in our community living room and historic roadhouse, The Kraken. The performance is from 7-10pm, and since we don’t charge a cover, we humbly ask you tip the musicians and bartenders generously to keep the music flowing.
Our old friend and neighbor Jonathan is the definition of “good people”, and this was his brilliant idea. He’s backed by the amazing Johnny Waken and Austin McCall on acapella, mandolin, harp, saw, slide, guitar, drums and percussion with bonus dance moves and stomps to boot.
Each week you can also expect amazing guest musicians from near and far. There aren’t many that would refuse the opportunity to join in such a magical evening.
Old Time Stringband Jam
1st and 3rd Tuesday of month
If you’re into traditional music, you should stop by The Kraken Tuesday evenings! An established group of Old Time String Band players gathers on the first and third Tuesdays of the month – you know, the odd ones. It’s a truly unique roadhouse experience!
The music starts promptly at 7pm and usually ends at 10pm, although a small circle of folks occasionally play later since it’s impossible to stop a good thing once it’s gained momentum!
