The Triangle Volksmarch is an annual, self-paced walking challenge for all ages in Raleigh, along the Capital Area Greenway. It takes place Saturday, November 18th, 2017.
Pick up a free map and passport at any of the event sites. Then visit stamp stations along 6.2 miles (10 K) of the Capital Area Greenway anytime between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. and earn the Volksmarch patch. You can hike the whole trail and catch a free shuttle back, or hike a portion of the trail and reverse back.
A limited shuttle service will help thru-hikers return to their vehicles near the NC Museum of Art or William B. Umstead depending on the direction of their hike.
Shuttle pick up from William B. Umstead State Park (Reedy Creek) entrance at: 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 4:00 pm.
Shuttle pick up from NC Museum of Art (near amphitheater entrance) at: 2:30 pm, 3:30 pm.
Along the way there will be fun activities:
- 10 a.m. to noon: Decorate a Walking Stick. Free hiking sticks while supplies last. NC Museum of Art Amphitheater.
- 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Citizen Science. Help biologists do real science experiments. Prairie Ridge EcoStation.
- 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. NCSU Outdoors. Try the ropes challenge course with University Recreation. Meet Triangle Greenways Council and a special guest Schenck Forest
- 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nature’s Holiday Traditions and S’mores. William B. Umstead State Park, Reedy Creek Entrance shelter #2
Volksmarch Pre-hike event
Friday, November 17th, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., stop by Great Outdoor Provision Co., in Cameron Village at 2017 Cameron Street, Raleigh, for live music and refreshment. This is also a free event. The GOPC Land Jam hosts members of the “Campfire Caravan,” a tour celebrating the American tradition of gathering communities around music. The bands Mipso and Lil Smokies will perform to help raise awareness of public lands and their need for protection.
