Historic Stagville, 5828 Old Oxford Highway, Durham, North Carolina, in 1860, was part of a vast plantation where the Bennehan and Cameron families enslaved over nine hundred people. Once one of the largest plantations in North Carolina, Historic Stagville now inspires new understanding about the history of slavery through preservation, interpretation, research, genealogy, and descendant engagement.
In June, Stagville is hosting Emancipation tours and Juneteenth tours.
Emancipation Tours
The emancipation tours take place every Wednesday in June, 2026, at 10 a.m. Tickets are $10. You’ll find a listing for each of these events here. A registration link will be available starting on May 15, 2026.
This guided tour will highlight how enslaved people claimed their freedom at Stagville in 1865. The tour explores the detailed history of Emancipation on one of North Carolina’s largest plantations. Hear stories of how formerly enslaved families celebrated, defended themselves, and searched for family, while the plantation owners strategized to hold on to their power and wealth. Stories of love, loss, labor, and family illuminate the complex history of freedom in the 1860s.
The Emancipation tour lasts about 75 minutes, with outdoor and indoor stops. The tour includes walking outdoors on uneven surfaces, stops inside historic buildings, and one 3/4 mile drive in your own vehicle.
Juneteenth Tours
In recognition of Juneteenth, Historic Stagville offers special Juneteenth tours on Friday, June 19, 2026.

Stories of love, loss, labor, and family illuminate the complex history of freedom in the 1860s.
On Juneteenth, guided tours will begin every half-hour, starting at 9 am. The last tour of the day will depart at 2:30 pm. Tours are first-come, first-served. Check in at the visitors center front desk to register for a tour.
All guided tours are free on Juneteenth, thanks to the support of the Historic Stagville Foundation.
