Faculty from the NC Chamber Music Institute will present a free concert Monday January 20th, 2019, celebrating the birthday of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.
The concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Church of the Nativity, 8849 Ray Road, Raleigh.
Dr. Timothy Holley, cellist and associate professor of music at NC Central University, is curating the program, which will include works by composers Florence Price, Adolphus Hailstork, Margaret Bonds. and Chevalier Saint Georges.
Performing artists, in addition to Dr. Holley, will include violinists Alice Ju and Charles Logan, violist Jacobus Hermsen, pianist Bradley Burgess and soprano Waltye Rasulala.
Dr. Holley’s doctoral dissertation at the University of Michigan focused on the cello music of African-American composers. Since 1997 he has collaborated with the Mallarme’ Chamber Players and the NC Symphony.
He has given world premiere performances of works by T. J. Anderson (Spirit Songs, commissioned by Yo Yo Ma), William Banfield (Soul Gone Home for soprano and chamber ensemble with Nneena Freelon), and Trevor Weston (Life Goes with Louise Toppin, with whom he performed at Weill Hall, Carnegie Hall).
