Check out a sport that’s really different than what you might be used to: Competitive tree climbing. On Saturday, October 7th, and Sunday, October 8th, watch King of the Canopy at Duke Park, 106 West Knox Street, Durham.
It’s free to watch. You might want to bring a chair.
Saturday, October 7th: Qualifying rounds from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Sunday, October 8th: Tournament starts at 8 a.m. The final round begins at 2:30 p.m. and lasts about 20 minutes.
Here’s a little bit of description of how the competition works:
Each game zone will be split in half, with the climbers from one team on each half. Both teams have six minutes to place several game tokens somewhere in the canopy. There will be pre-installed access lines for ascent, but climbers can’t work off those lines.
After the first six minutes, the teams switch sides and have another six minutes to try to retrieve the tokens that were placed by the other team. The first team to get all the other team’s tokens, or the team with the most tokens at the end of the six minute half, wins the round.
Here’s a video of a similar competition from 2016 in Indiana.
