Creative Collisions: Aly Khalifa Talks Kirby Derby, its Birth & Growth
Aug. 2, 2017, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m
Community Activist Aly Khalifa from Designbox and the Pullen Park Terrace Neighborhood will be speaking about the upcoming 16th Annual Kirby Derby on August 26, and how it has grown from a small block party to a much-loved city event.
Did you know?: Pullen Park Terrace won 2nd place as a National Neighborhood of the Year 2017 for their efforts presenting Kirby Derby! Aly will talk about how a tiny little neighborhood in Raleigh can do such big things.
His lunch talk will include insights on:
- What it takes to create a homegrown event, give it the space to grow, and support a rebirth with a larger full-city vision
- How a tiny neighborhood can positively impact a large city
- How and why the event is moving from Pullen Park Terrace to a new location on Dorothea Dix Park
- A description of Kirby Derby Day events on August 26, the collaboration with Y’all at Dix PArk, and how YOU can participate
- Bring your questions and join Creative Collisions on Wednesday, August 2, at 12:00 noon. This event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Register today!
What
Designbox is inviting interesting Triangle people to share their stories about what they do and what they’re working on—people in business, government, the arts, design, and more.
Why
It’s so easy to get caught up in our day-to-day work that it’s hard to make time to step back and do intentionally non-billable work. That’s where this monthly lunch series comes in.
We want to build community, inform, inspire, and create opportunities for creative collision. The lunches are less “convention center keynote” and more “chatting at your kitchen table with fascinating people.”
You’ll go back to work with new ideas, strengthened connections, and a full stomach.
Cost
The event is free and open to the public.
You’re welcome to bring your lunch. If you’d like us to order pizza for you, choose the “PIZZA” ticket above and bring $5 cash to the event to chip in for the pizza.
Where
Designbox presents Creative Collisions at Google Fiber, 518 W. Jones Street, Raleigh, NC 27603 (at the corner of Glenwood and Jones) from 12-1pm.
Parking
There is metered parking on Glenwood. Or park in our small lot at Designbox and walk over to Google Fiber from there (down the street a block at 413 Glenwood, where Helios used to be. Look for the big cat mural.)
Lost on the way? Call or text Designbox speaker series organizer Beth Khalifa at 919-272-0431.

Cardboard Automatas are a creative, playful way to explore simple machines using levers and gears. Make buzzing bees, friendly flowers and happy hummingbirds MOVE to celebrate the pollination process.
We will also make newspaper plant-a-pots for kids to take and start their own seedling to plant at home.
