Kids aged 9 and 10 years old are invited to a 5-day Code Camp this summer at Tarboro Road Community Center, 121 N Tarboro St, Raleigh.
It takes place Monday, August 13th, through Friday, August 17th, 2018, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The cost is $40 for Raleigh residents and $55 for non-residents, and all participants receive a free Kindle Fire.
To register, go to RecLink and search for barcode 223633.
This is an excellent, low-cost way to introduce kids to computer programming.
At the class, kids will explore the basic concepts of programming through:
- ScratchJr
- CS Unplugged
- ‘Harold the Robot’
- Inspirational talks from practicing computer programmers
- Videos
- Local robotics club demonstrations
Code Camp specifically targets underrepresented groups, which in computer science means female, African-American, and Hispanic students, but all students are also welcome.
Advantages of Code Camp
- This class offers highly qualified teachers, including several with PhDs in computer science and the 2017 Raleigh Volunteer of the Year award winner.
- Children that participate in this class get to keep their Kindle Fire after participating in the camp, ensuring that they have a tablet with pre-loaded coding games to continue to learn on.
- This class features dramatically lower fees than any comparative camp (e.g., $40 cost vs a typical $400 cost for a similar program in the private sector, mainly thanks to sponsorship by ABB Inc).
- Reduced fees are available by calling the number on the flyer.
