We’ll start with a storytime to learn more about her inspiring journey and contributions to science. Then, launch into fun by creating and testing our own straw rocket launchers! During Black History Month, Durham County Libraries will be highlighting the achievments of Black Professionals in their respective fields. For this event, they have partnered with the locally-operated Environmental Justice organization, Black Soil. Its founder Ariel Mial, will conduct a panel discussion that will further showcase the stories and work of 3 amazing guest speakers. They will recount the experiences that emboldened them to step into the field of Environmental Science, as well as the challenges they have encountered on their career paths. This is done in the hopes of educating the general public on the work and achievements of black women in Environmental Science who serve as one of the most underrepresented demographics of STEM professionals.
Film: Negro Durham Marches On – An Examination of the Past and Future of Hayti in Durham

Join Durham County Library’s North Carolina Collection for a special screening of the historic 1948 film Negro Durham Marches On by Don Parisher. The film was commissioned by the Durham Business and Professional Chain, and it depicts many of the thriving businesses, organizations, and residential homes in Durham’s Hayti community before they were lost to the construction of the Durham Freeway in the 1970s. In 2021, the library received funding from the National Film Preservation Foundation to restore and preserve the film for the future. In honor of Black History Month, we want to highlight the importance of this film with the local community.
