On Saturday, April 30, the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA), 2110 Blue Ridge Road, in Raleigh, hosts ArtScene, an annual free event for teens across North Carolina. It will take place 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the East Building. It’s free. Centered on the theme of “place,” the event features live music, dance, and improv performances; a pop-up teen art gallery; art-making activities; and food. Participants will also have the opportunity to work with Brooklyn-based North Carolina artist and NCMA artist-in-residence Greg Lindquist on a site- specific installation.
ArtScene is organized by the NCMA Teen Arts Council, a group of local teen leaders interested in art and museums. ArtScene activities include:
- Upcycled Fashion Lab: Participants can create wearable art from everyday materials with Durham’s nonprofit creative reuse arts center Scrap Exchange.
- Performance Stage: Live music, dance, and improv performances include those by the Enloe Dance Troupe, the Happy Accidents, Faux Fleurs, UR Mom, and more.
- Landscapes Remixed Teen Exhibition: Featuring work from teen artists participating in summer workshops and the NCMA Teen Arts Council, Landscapes Remixed investigates the Museum Park’s layered history through visual storytelling, poetry, and collaborative mixed-media works.
- North Carolina Museum of Natural Science Pop-Up: Participants are invited to explore the intersection of art and science with teens from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
- Smoke and Water, a Living Painting: NCMA artist-in-residence Greg Lindquist leads teens in a collaborative, site-specific installation titled Smoke and Water.
- “Choose Your Own Adventure” Photo Booth: A professional photographer will photograph eventgoers in this playful photo booth.
- Teens, Inspired Pop-Up Exhibition: This temporary exhibition features poems, sculpture, and two- and three-dimensional works of art that have been accepted into the upcoming Teens, Inspired exhibition. These pieces were inspired by art from the NCMA’s permanent collection and will be on view in the Museum’s East Building July 22−October 2, 2016.
- Memory Map: Teens are encouraged to share their favorite stories about and memories of North Carolina on a 3-D map of the state.
- Think inside the Box: Participants can select from a series of prompts and add to a collaborative installation.
- Cosmic Caps: Teens can contribute to a larger-than-life mandala, inspired by the work of environmental artist Bryant Holsenbeck.
- Poetry Fox: The Poetry Fox will create spontaneous custom poems.
