Global architecture studio, Foster + Partners, has come up with a fun and creative way for kids to learn about architecture and building.
They’ve created several templates, in PDF form, which you can download and print out. Then kids can cut them out, fold and glue them, to create the basic shapes, which they will then use to make their own buildings and cities.
The templates provide the basic building blocks and the kids provide the creativity.
Kids are encouraged to take a picture of their creations and share on social media with the hashtag #architecturefromhome, or to send their pictures to marketing@fosterandpartners.com.
The only materials you’ll need are paper (possibly card stock), scissors, glue, and a few cocktail sticks (or toothpicks.)
The toothpicks might be the limiting factor for you at home right now. We haven’t tried these projects ourselves, but these toothpicks, from Amazon, look good for projects.

Future Architect and their Fantastical Skyscraper: This is a fun collaborative project, where participants each draw a different part of the skyscraper or architect, creating a wacky result.
Learn to draw trees like architects: This links to two templates, one with a worksheet showing drawing techniques, and one with a worksheet for younger children to color.
What Makes a Building: This is a little song, with illustrations, that shows the kids the basics of what makes a building.
