Durham Central Park, 501 Foster Street, is hosting several free blues concerts on Fridays in July. Warehouse Blues concerts will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Beer and wine will be available for purchase, and food trucks will be on site as well.
Here’s the schedule:
July 15: Rissi Palmer
You can’t really put Rissi Palmer’s sound in a box, but she uses “Southern Soul”. We like that and are glad she calls the Triangle home! “Her new music — with its neo-soul-to-throwback-southern-R&B sound and down-home, confessional point-of-view — (develops) when and how she wants to” –Rolling Stone. Between sets, join Rissi for an intimate power house Blues vocal workshop. Whether you want to make a living as a Blues singer or just express yourself, join our free workshop. FREE and all ages.
July 22: Kamara Thomas & The Night Drivers Tribute to Blues Women
Names like Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Shemekia Copeland, Susan Tedeschi, and Brittney Howard carry us through the early 20th century Blues into the 21st. Tonight, Durham-based Kamara Thomas shapeshifts into a Blues woman, interpreting some of her (and your) favorite female Blues artists. FREE and all ages.
July 29: Samantha Fish
Blues guitarist and songwriter Samantha Fish, now in her mid-20s, started out playing drums. Her latest album, Wild Heart, is produced by Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi All-Stars). “Fish has built an international reputation as a powerhouse blues-rock musician with an enormous voice and tremendous skill as a guitarist. She also combines the artful sensitivity of Bonnie Raitt and the effortless swagger of the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards” –Kansas City Star. FREE and all-ages.
